Meet the Team
Online only (due to Covid) in Bethesda, MD and online across Maryland, Virginia, DC.
Hi, I’m Maurice T. Thornton. I work with teens and adults who have ongoing challenges with depression and anxiety. My goal is to help you stop feeling overwhelmed and depressed and start empowering you to make big changes. I have extensive experience working with women who have experienced domestic violence and teens who struggle with social and emotional skills in crisis management and conflict resolution.
I am an enthusiastic educator, coach and counseling intern working towards a Doctor of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I have more than a decade of experience providing guidance to youth and adults regarding mental and physical health, social behavior, and career/academic achievement.
I am currently completing a Doctorate in Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at University of Western States with an expected graduation date of December 2021.
I graduated in 2018 with a Master of Science in Sport Management from Southern New Hampshire University
My Journey To Becoming a Counselor
My own growth through personal life struggles is what helps me relate so deeply with clients.
I like to work with teens and adults who are having a hard time figuring out who they are because I personally struggled with my identity as a teenager. I also understand how difficult it can be to transition and navigate this world while making an effort to realize your unique talents. My personal experience allows me to connect with teens and help them maximize their potential and live a life full of vigor. They are also what lead me to become the counselor and doctoral student I am today.
I can’t think of anything more reward than being a counselor because helping people gives my life meaning. I love guiding people towards positive changes and watching them transform their lives. However, the most rewarding thing about being a counselor is knowing that I had a part in helping someone else transform their life.
I am committed to empowering you to make big changes.
I have a strong pull towards helping and bring non-judgmental acceptance to sessions
I have a natural ability to:
- Understand people’s experiences
- Help people feel comfortable
- Collaborate with people to set goals and help them reach them
- Be flexible on the path of discovering what’s going on
People who know me often say that I am a good listener who can help people feel heard and understood which helps people feel seen and start to heal.
Our Sessions Are Focused On You
In our sessions together, I will provide you with a safe and comfortable space where you can be yourself.
It’s important to me to provide a non-judgmental space where you can be yourself and stay open to any feedback and questions you may have. There isn’t a “one size fits all” approach to counseling so our sessions will fit your specific needs and concerns.
As a Counseling Intern, I Embrace the Following Philosophies:
- I believe that empathy can change the world
- I believe that you deserve to feel better
- I believe that you are worthy of love and care
- I believe that there is no shame in asking for help
- I believe that sometimes small steps in the right direction end up being the biggest steps in the end
