Sara Sheikh, LCSW-C

Trauma and grief informed counseling for adults and families online only (due to COVID) across DC and Maryland

I am Sara Sheikh, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who enjoys supporting adults and families in reaching their wellness goals. My specialty includes counseling clients who have challenges with overwhelming emotions or behaviors, and difficulties in their relationships due to unresolved trauma, chronic stress, grief or loss.  I am trained in EMDR, Brainspotting, Trauma-Focused CBT, Attachment Regulation Competency (ARC) Framework, Mindfulness-Based CBT, and Yoga-Based Psychotherapy.  My goal is to help you stop feeling and acting overwhelmed and start guiding you to where things feel manageable again.


Educational Background

I received a Masters of Social Work with a primary concentration of Clinical with a specialization in Mental Health from the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

My bachelor’s degree is in Cultural Anthropology. I am a Licensed Certified Social Worker-Clinical and a Clinical Supervisor approved by the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners. I serve as a Field Instructor for the University of Maryland, School of Social Work.

I obtained a Certification in Hospice Care and as an End of Life Doula with Gilchrist Hospice Care. I am a 500 Hour Certified Yoga Teacher through Bhagavata-Sevaya School of Yoga and The Sivananda Yoga Ashram.

My Journey To Becoming A Holistic Psychotherapist

Im no different from the clients I see. Ive been through both wonderful and difficult experiences that have shaped who I am and how I help others.

As a young adult I was gifted with the opportunity to work with an EMDR therapist.  She helped me heal from the effects of an early childhood trauma and restore hope in my life. Alongside this, I began learning and practicing mindfulness meditation and yoga. This somatic approach to healing helps me understand how trauma lives in the body and informs how I help others navigate their personal healing journeys.

I am passionate about preventative care, early intervention and normalizing the need for mental health care in the lives of children and families. I understand the importance of creating a safe space for adults to approach and heal uncomfortable feelings from their past.

My life experiences are what led me to become the Holistic Psychotherapist I am today.

Helping People Is A Gift To Others, But Also To Myself

Being a Psychotherapist is an honor. I love helping people become healthier and more empowered, and witnessing them achieve more fulfilling lives. The most rewarding thing about being a Psychotherapist is seeing a person walk away lighter, more free, and excited about their life.

    People who know me often say that I am a good listener with a calming demeanor, who can help people through difficult and stressful times.

Our Sessions Are Focused On You

Sessions will provide you with the space to explore your thoughts, feelings, and goals. In feeling safe and comfortable, youll be able to explore what you need and be understood and heard.

Its important to me to create safety within a session and check in on your progress as we go. There isnt a one size fits all” approach to Trauma-informed therapy. Our sessions will fit your specific needs and concerns.
