About Laura Lansrud-Lopez
Hi, I’m Laura Lansrud-Lopez. I’m a Professional Art Therapist, Mental Health Counselor, and Clinical Supervisor who works with individuals who have experienced adverse life experiences, grief, loss, or trauma. My goal is to help you stop feeling disconnected or lost and start encouraging you to see healing and transformation.
I graduated from Southwestern College in Santa Fe, NM, with a master’s degree in Art Therapy / Counseling. I have advanced training in art therapy, Sandplay therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS). I also teach graduate level art therapy and counseling courses, workshops, and continuing education classes for licensed professionals. I am currently completing my doctoral dissertation at the California Institute of Integral Studies.
My Journey to Becoming a Therapist
My own growth through personal life struggles is what helps me relate so deeply with clients
I’ve always used art making, journaling, and creativity to cope with difficulties in my life, bullying when I was a child, grief after the death of my daughter, and being a highly sensitive person (HSP). In college I discovered I was also adept in the sciences and pursued my first master’s degree in Forensic Sciences from GWU. I later worked as a forensic technician with the FBI in the Firearms Unit. As the first person in my family to obtain a master’s degree and hold a security clearance, I thought I was doing the right thing. But at some point, the call of my soul toward a more meaningful career was undeniable. I left the FBI to pursue a degree in Art Therapy and Counseling so that I could be of service to others through therapeutic relationships.
I’m passionate about using the healing power of creativity and the effectiveness of evidence-based techniques in service to mental health and wellness. I believe that when we cultivate a deep and introspective relationship with our inner world and psyche, our relationships with others thrive. As James Hillman says, “the gift of an image is that it provides a place to watch your soul.” It is from this foundation that I invite clients and supervisees to use art, symbol, poetry, and other forms of creativity as an avenue for introspection, self-exploration, self-expression, growth, and healing.
I have a natural ability to:
- Use art therapy to help people identify what they are feeling
- Help people deepen their understanding of Self and develop insight
- Sense what other people may be thinking and feeling
- Accept people for who they are and in their current life circumstances
Our Sessions Are Focused On You
Sessions will provide you with the space to feel what you need to feel and ways to express yourself using art therapy. In feeling safe and comfortable, you’ll be able to tap into your inner knowing to gain clarity.
It’s important to me to provide a non-judgmental space where you can be yourself and ensure that the process is collaborative. There isn’t a “one size fits all” approach to art therapy.
Our sessions will fit your specific needs and concerns.
- I believe that you are worthy of love and care
- I believe that transformation can happen through creative expression
- I believe that past experiences can be healed through integration and acknowledgment
- I believe that art therapy must address the person as a whole – their mind, body, and spirit
- I believe that we can stop feeling shame when we share our story with someone who can hear it with empathy and understanding
